Jason Derulo confirmed that he broke up with longtime girlfriend Jordin Sparks during an awkward interview with Minnesota-based DJ Big D’s KDWB radio show.
Rumors of the split broke prior to the singer’s appearance, but the star still decided to go through with the interview. When asked to comment about the split, Derulo initially said, “I’d rather not.”
When the radio host asked if the pair remained friends, Derulo answered: “Yes. Everything is cool. It’s not a bad a situation. It’s not one of those things.”
Several months ago, Derulo opened up about the pressure he felt to propose to Sparks, telling MTV then: “I was just trying to explain that we have forever, so what’s the rush… There is a lot of pressure, and there was a lot of pressure before the song. I wrote the song because of the pressure and then I made the pressure worse because people just listen to the chorus and all they hear is ‘Will you marry me?’ so they’re like ‘Oh you’re proposing’ I’m like ‘No’. In the song I’m saying when the time is right, I’m saying we have the rest of our lives. So the perfect time is on its way.”
It’s unclear what led to the break up, but last week Sparks commented on Twitter: “I just wrote the saddest song of my life.”
Jason Derulo and Jordin Sparks had been dating for three years.
