Steve Carell has signed on to take over the role supposed to be played by Zach Galifiankis on the upcoming Peter Sollett drama “Freeheld.”
Deadline reports that Carell is set to play Steven Goldstein in the film, which is based on a 2007 documentary of the same name.
“Freeheld” follows Laurel Hester’s battle against the New Jersey’s Domestic Partnership Act. Hester sought to amend the act in an effort to grant pension benefits to her domestic partner Stacie Andree.
Steven Goldstein founded the civil rights organization Garden State Equality. Goldstein was a proponent for Hester’s cause.
Joining Steve Carell are Ellen Page and Julianne Moore. Freeheld has no release date yet.
