After releasing one video after another this week, Weird Al Yankovic shared that his album “Mandatory Fun” has landed the Billboard album chart’s #1 spot.
The 54-year-old entertainer took to Twitter to share the news, saying: “MANDATORY FUN enters the Billboard album chart this week at #1. Wow. WOW.” He adds: “If you’d told me 30 years ago this would happen, I never would’ve believed it. If you’d told me 2 WEEKS ago, I never would’ve believed it.”
“Mandatory Fun” is Weird Al’s 14th studio album. He has been creating parodies of songs for over three decades. His new album spoofs hit songs like Pharrell’s “Happy” with the song “Tacky” and Iggy Azalea’s hit “Fancy” with “Handy.”
Artists have been honored to be chosen for Weird Al’s parodies. Pharrell told Billboard magazine that Yankovic asked for his approval, explaining: “He wrote me a letter and I was like, ‘Aww, what?!’ Yeah!”
Yankovic continued the celebration after news of his Billboard chart-topping album. He took to Twitter again and said: “I’m so pleased everybody is enjoying the album, and I’m enormously grateful for everyone’s support. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU.”
