Will Ferrell & Chad Smith drum-off finally happened on 'The Tonight Show'

After a long-standing rumor and joke that comedian Will Ferrell and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ drummer Chad Smith were the same person, the two finally showed up Thursday night on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” for a charity drum off.

After a long-standing rumor and joke that comedian Will Ferrell and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ drummer Chad Smith were the same person, the two finally showed up Thursday night on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” for a charity drum off.

Ferrell and Smith, wearing identical faded blue jeans, KISS shirts and backward baseball caps, pretended to be one another as they sat for a chat with Jimmy Fallon.

The rumor began during a Reddit session, when a fan asked about the two. Ferrell said at the time: “A lot of people think that it’s me playing for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. But that would be an insult to Chad Smith. The truth of the matter is there is no Will Ferrell. Only Chad Smith.”

Fallon gave Ferrell and Smith each four drum solos, while taunting each other as they play matching drum kits. Smith turned to Ferrell and said, “Ladies first,” as the taunting continued, Ferrell asked Smith in a childish voice: “Looks like baby learned how to play the drums!” and later responded to one of Smith’s solos by saying, “That was cute. Do you play for the Lukewarm Chili Peppers?”

The drum off ended with the rest of the Chili Peppers performing “Don’t Fear the Reaper” with Will.

The drum-off was for charity – Ferrell’s recipient was the Cancer for College and Smith’s was for Little Kids Rock.
