Tom Hardy is set to play self-proclaimed “American terrorist” Mark Stroman in a film adaptation of Anand Giridharadas’ book “The True American: Murder and Mercy in Texas.”
“The Hurt Locker” director Kathryn Bigelow is helming the film. She will also serve as producer alongside Zero Dark Thirty’s Megan Ellison.
“The True American” will be set after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, and focus on Texan vigilante Stroman, who was executed in 2011 after he was found guilty of murdering two immigrants and shooting Bangladesh Air Force veteran Rais Bhuiyan in the head. When Stroman was arrested, he said he was doing “what every American wanted to … We’re at war.”
Bhuiyan survived, but was left blind in one eye. He campaigned to spare Stroman’s life, saying: “His execution will not eradicate hate crimes from this world. We will just simply lose another human life.”
This will be Bigelow’s third film post-9/11. She helmed The Hurt Locker set during the second Iraq war and Zero Dark Thirty a re-enactment of the assassination of Osama Bin Laden.
