Despite an R rating, Mark Wahlberg’s film about the true military story powers to a convincing win at theaters.
The story about a group of Navy SEALs’ military mission gone awry won the box office this weekend. According to studio estimates from box office trackers Rentrak, “Lone Survivor” collected $38.9 million overall.
The movie, which also stars Taylor Kitsch and Emile Hirsch, opened in limited release on Christmas Day. It surprised many movie analysts since the film had an R rating and was competing to the top with animated film “Frozen.”
“Lone Survivor” tells the real-life story of the lone survivor of a failed military operation in Afghanistan in 2005 that left 19 U.S. casualties.
Box Office Mojo analyst Ray Subers explained: “Instead of focusing on the downer of a story, Universal’s marketing has played up the movie’s themes of courage and brotherhood.”
