With many of its alums gone into film and other gigs, “Saturday Night Live” was a little short of funny men and women, but SNL has now hired six new cast members to the show, with Cecily Strong as a new anchor for its Weekend Update desk.
SNL executive producer Lorne Michaels announced Monday that Cecily Strong will sit next to Seth Meyers on the anchor desk as soon as the new season begins. He revealed: “Cecily, from the first show, was right there. She exploded.” Strong joined SNL last year and created memorable characters, including “The Girl You Wished You Hadn’t Started a Conversation With at a Party.”
Seth Meyers will be leaving SNL as he begins hosting “Late Night” on Feb. 24, 2014, Michaels said he’s not yet sure if Seth would continue on the Weekend Update. But since Lorne is also taking over as executive producer for Seth’s ‘Late Night,’ he’ll probably allow Meyers to continue working on SNL on the side.
SNL will also be welcoming six new faces. NBC confirmed Monday that Beck Bennett, John Milhiser, Kyle Mooney, Mike O’Brien, Brooks Wheelan and Noël Wells have all signed on to SNL.
SNL kicks off its 39th season on September 28 with Tina Fey as host and musical guest Arcade Fire.
