The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing arts announced the recipients of the 36th annual national celebration of the arts Thursday.
The list of the 2013 Kennedy Center Honorees include The Piano Man Billy Joel, Academy Award-winning actress Shirley MacLaine, Latin rock fusion pioneer Carlos Santana, opera singer Martina Arroyo and pianist, keyboardist, bandleader and composer Herbie Hancock.
Billy Joel said in a statement: “I’m truly honored to be named a Kennedy Center honoree along with the other esteemed artists named this year. And to have my name added to the illustrious roster of outstanding musicians that have already been so honored is very meaningful to me. But to be chosen for this special award essentially for doing what I love most amazes me more than anything.”
The honorees will be celebrated at the Kennedy Center on December 15, with the event aired at 9 p.m. ET/PT on December 29 on CBS. The gala will be include a dinner hosted by Secretary of State John Kerry and a pre-gala reception at the White House with President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama.
