Talk show host and comedian Ellen DeGeneres is set to be the host of next year’s Oscars. It will be her second time to host the annual awards show.
Ellen DeGeneres hosted the 79th Academy Awards in 2007 with a whopping 39.9 million viewers. When it was first announced, Ellen joked: “I am so excited to be hosting the Oscars for the second time. You know what they say – the third time’s the charm.”
The people behind the Oscars chose Ellen probably as a “safer choice” after The Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane received plenty of criticism over his hosting stint this year. Variety even called Seth’s hosting “the most over-analysed three-hour job in Hollywood.”
Ellen also announced the news via Twitter, telling her fans: “It’s official: I’m hosting the #Oscars! I’d like to thank @TheAcademy, my wife Portia and, oh dear, there goes the orchestra.”
Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said Ellen was the best choice as “there are few stars today who have Ellen’s gift for comedy, with her great warmth and humanity.” Newly-elected Academy Awards president Cheryl Boone Isaacs said she “agreed immediately that Ellen is the ideal host for this year’s show,” adding that they are “looking forward to an entertaining, engaging and fun show.”
The Academy Awards is scheduled on Sunday, 2nd of March 2014.
