19 years since “Independence Day” brought home $800 million worldwide, Fox, director Roland Emmerich and co-writer Dean Devlin have been planning two sequels since 2009. Now that the films are a go, which will be shot back-to-back to save money, Emmerich reveals who will reprise their roles and who won’t.
Earlier this month, Fox announced that Independence Day 2 will open in cinemas on July 3, 2015. Now some of the cast are revealed. Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum are set to return for ‘Independence Day 2.
However, Will Smith may not be back to reprise his role as Captain Steve Hillier even if director Roland Emmerich wants him to. It may not be possible because Emmerich says the actor has become “expensive,” adding that “he’d also be too much of a marquee name. We have maybe half of the people that you would know from the first film, and the other half people who are new.”
However, Emmerich told Movies.com that he is hoping to get Smith back even for just a cameo to “pass the torch” to a new generation of cast members. He adds that Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman’s characters will return for a storyline that “will focus on present-day Earth, when the aliens return and a younger generation is tasked with fighting them off.”
