Johnny Depp is in talks to star as the Baker in Rob Marshall’s film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine musical “Into the Woods.”
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Depp would join Meryl Streep, who was previously announced to take on the flashy role of the Witch.
“Into the Woods” focuses on Baker (played by Depp) and his wife, who made a deal with an evil witch (played by Streep) for the couple to conceive. Their journey through the woods allow them to meet famous fairy tale characters like Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, Jack and his magical beans.
The Disney musical adaptation reportedly “explores what happens after these fairytale characters get their happily ever after.”
This marks Depp’s second time to star in a film adapted from a Sondheim musical. He previously starred in the 2007 big-screen version “Sweeney Todd.”
