Big bosses at FOX are reportedly concerned about the record low ratings of American Idol’s episodes last week that the network planned to get Mariah Carey replaced by ex-judge JLo mid-season.
According to an interesting report from The Hollywood Reporter, which is famous for never getting it wrong, Idol execs were in talks with JLo to go back to the show mid-season in an attempt to boost ratings. However, the plan backfired when Carey found out and her team threatened to take legal action against the show.
A rep for FOX denied the report, claiming the news “is just another ridiculous ‘Idol’ judge rumor, likely started by talks of Jennifer performing on the finale.” While Carey’s rep denied the report, “Idol” producer Nigel Lythgoe also said he has not “been included in any conversation regarding replacing Mariah with Jen this season.”
THR calls the move a “panicked secret plot” after American Idol lost to a repeat of CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory” with a low 2.8 rating. It is also becoming clear that many of its former fans are switching to “The Voice,” which has seen ratings climb to a 5.2 rating in the 18-49 demo.
It’s interesting to note that current judges Nicki Minaj and Carey cannot contain their bickering on the show. It is also widely rumored that JLo and Carey cannot stand each other, so the news of Mariah threatening to sue if replaced and embarrassed may seem possible.
