A source from CBS has revealed to TVGuide.com that How I Met Your Mother is expected to close a deal with 20th Century Fox for a ninth and final season.
The show’s production team tweeted the news Saturday, writing: “It’s official: #HIMYM is getting a 9th season! Hooray!”
Although there’s no official statement about how many episodes will be included in the last season, Carter Bays told TVGuide.com that he and co-creator Craig Thomas were coming “to the point of no return” not only since contracts for the five stars will expire at the end of the season, but also since the stories they’ve been telling for 8 years are slowly being tied together (ex: Barney and Robin’s love story).
While contract negotiations are being settled, Bays said, “I’d like it to be resolved before the New Year, but I’m not sure. It’s really difficult not knowing, but we’re optimistic and confident that we’ll know soon. I’m pretty sure we’ll be able to have something to say about it in January. It’s a weird situation. We’d be happy with either one. We hope it works out for 9 because we love working here and we love this job and we do feel like we have some great stories to tell in Season 9. But if this is the last season, we’d be able to say it was a well-told story.”
Once HIMYM officially goes for Season 9, the show can go two ways – one is to reveal the mother (Ted’s love-of-his-life) at the finale, or show Ted’s courtship of the mother throughout the season. Which would you prefer?
