Michael Arndt, who won an Academy Award for his screenwriting work on “Little Miss Sunshine,” has been hired to write the screenplay for “Star Wars: Episode VII.”
Lucasfilm announced the news on its Star Wars website Friday, just after reports that Arndt turned over a 50-page snippet for the much-anticipated 7th installment of the epic franchise.
The film is slated to be released in 2015 and will launch a new trilogy under Disney, which acquired Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion on Oct. 30. George Lucas is serving as a creative consultant with current Lucasfilm co-chairman Kathleen Kennedy executive producing.
Arndt won the Oscar for best original screenplay for “Little Miss Sunshine” in 2006. He was also nominated for best adapted screenplay for writing “Toy Story 3” in 2010 and co-written the upcoming “Hunger Games: Catching Fire” with Simon Beaufoy.
