‘Walking Dead’ exec: ‘Series almost aired on NBC, HBO’

The Walking Dead’s Greg Nicotero has said that both NBC and HBO were interested in airing the series.

The zombie series recently pulled in record ratings for cable network AMC, with 10.9m viewers tuning in for the third season premiere.

Nicotero, who also serves as the show’s chief make-up effects artist, told The Huffington Post, “Thank goodness we wound up at AMC – they totally get this show.”

He also claimed that neither broadcast network NBC nor cable channel HBO would commit to a Walking Dead series if the levels of violence and gore were not toned down.

“Right from the beginning, [AMC has] been completely trusting and supportive of what we’ve been trying to do with this series,” he said.

The Walking Dead airs on Sundays at 9/8c on AMC.
