Oprah Winfrey, one of the most powerful people in Ho0llywood, has now become an honorary doctor as well. She received an honrary doctorate this weekend from a South African university for her work in the country to help young women better themselves.
The degree was given from the University of Free State, in honor of her work on an all-girls school and her dedication to furthering the efforts of legendary leader Nelson Mandela.
The school became the source of scandal in 2007 when a staffer was accused of sexually abusing students. It was then further put under fire when several white students were accused of abuse and racism against a black staff member. They then further caused anger when they objected to the integration of black and white students, despite the school being opened by a black woman.
Those issues have settled down after years of work by Jonathan Jensen, who was appointed to create a foundation of caring and compassion between students and deal with issues of racism that still cropped up among the student body from both sides.
With how much work she herself has put into that school, and her own reasons for doing so, I think this is a wonderful thing. She expressed her happiness during the ceremony.
“What has happened here at Free State in terms of racial reconciliation, of peace, of harmony, of one heart understanding and opening itself to another heart is nothing short of a miracle. It is truly what the new South Africa is all about.”
