Mariah Carey to return $1M in Gadhafi funds

Mariah Carey plans to return a total of $1 million fee that was paid by Moammar Gadhafi’s family for a performance at a party.

The singer said in a statement carried by People Magazine, “I was naive and unaware of who I was booked to perform for.” She added, “I feel horrible and embarrassed to have participated in this mess.”

World leaders have called on the Libyan dictator to step down after days of deadly violence in Libya that has killed hundreds of people. Gadhafi’s troops have imposed a bloody crackdown on an uprising against his four-decade rule and he and his sons are being investigated for possible war crimes.

It was also reported in February, Carey, Beyonce and Usher were paid $1 million to sing at New Year’s Eve parties Gadhafi’s family threw the Caribbean island of St. Barts in 2009 and 2010.

The spokesperson for the pregnant 41-year-old singer had no comment on what Carey has done with her fee.
