The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has filed an official complaint with NBC for a skit about a once-a-day over the counter hormone therapy pill.
According to GLAAD, the skit, which features various men with facial hair and other masculine features in female dress, it is offensive and without any ‘joke’ behind it.
“The piece was a mock commercial for estrogen replacement therapy and featured men with facial hair wearing dresses, meant to represent transgender women. This segment cannot be defended as ‘just a joke’ because there was no ‘joke’ to speak of. The attempted comedy of the skit hinges solely on degrading the lives and experiences of transgender women.”
I disagree. I thought the skit was surprisingly funny and well made. There was nothing especially offensive about it, though it was in bad taste.
I think that any time you have an issue or group that becomes mainstream, they will be open to satire. The fact that the sit could be made and aired on television during those hours shows that times have changed greatly. Transgendered men and women are accepted on a level they never would before, though prejudice exists just as homophobia does.
See the skit for yourself below. What do you think? Is it offensive, or just slightly edgy satire?
