Screenwriter Simon Monjack, the 39-year-old husband of late actress Brittany Murphy, had been battling weight gain, cancer and heart diseases, but it was heart break from losing his young wife only five months ago that led to Simon’s death.
After Murphy died five months ago, Simon Monjack spent hours planning tributes for the actress and caring for Murphy’s mom. Since then, Monjack gained 40 pounds and ignored his own failing health.
A friend confirmed that Monjack had been complaining of suffering seizures and fighting an arduous battle with oral cancer, but his heart eventually gave out, both figuratively and literally. His spokesman Roger Neal added, “Simon needed a [heart] bypass. I was told he needed a bypass, and I said to him, ‘Simon, you have so much going on. Let’s keep you healthy.’ I said, ‘You want to be healthy. Don’t you?’ He said, ‘Yes,’ but he [added], ‘The bypass can wait.’”
Brittany Murphy’s mom Sharon found Monjack’s body Sunday night in the L.A. home she had been sharing with him since her daughter died. Near Monjack’s body were bottles of prescription drugs similar to the ones Murphy had taken before her death.
Officials said the cause of death appears to be either a heart attack or an accidental drug overdose.
During his last interview with RadarOnline.com, Simon Monjack said, “I don’t think you understand how much my wife and I loved each other. I can only wish you that closeness with another human being. Every story needs a villain. I don’t understand why people say such horrible things.” He added that he was planning a six-month commemoration of her death. He also was trying to create a Brittany Murphy Foundation. He said, “I want to do something special for Brittany to honor her memory.”
