Theron has signed on to appear in a fourth Mad Max film alongside British actor Tom Hardy.

According to Variety, Hardy is believed to play the role of “Mad” Max Rockatansky, the role which was played by Mel Gibson in the first three films. Although the Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron has been confirmed to appear on the film, no details have been released on what role Theron will play.

The film, entitled “Mad Max: Fury Road,” will be written and directed by George Miller. Filming starts August 2010 in Australia.

The Mad Max series revolves around a policemen turned ‘road warrior’ living in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. First released in 1979, the original Mad Max was a cult hit that inspired a 1981 sequel known as The Road Warrior in the US. The third film entitled “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” was released in 1985 and saw Gibson co-starring with singer Tina Turner.

A fourth film in the Mad Max series has been rumored to be in the works since 2002, but filming in Namibia scheduled on 2003 were called off.
