Kanye West jumped onstage with Taylor Swift, while she was accepting her award for ‘Best Female Video.’ Was it staged or not? Taylor Swift answers some questions after the Video Music Awards.
The 19-year-old singer said she was initially excited after learning she won, but the excitement faded when the MC took the opportunity to champion Beyonce during the time allotted for Swift’s acceptance speech.
Backstage, Swift told MTV News, “It has been a crazy night, hasn’t it?” She added that when Kanye initially emerged, she thought it would end up being a good thing, but she didn’t expect it to be one of the most controversial moments in VMA history. Taylor explained, “Well, you know, I was up there and I was standing there and I saw Kanye up on the stage. I was really excited … and I kind of wasn’t excited anymore.”
Near the end of the VMAs, Beyonce invited Swift onstage to have the acceptance speech she deserved while picking up her own Moonman for ‘Video of the Year.’ Taylor said thanks to an “incredibly classy” Beyoncé, who forfeited her stage time when she won Video of the Year to allow Swift her moment to shine, without any interruption. She said, “You know, they told me to be ready just in case she might want to say something. It was just so wonderful and so incredibly classy of her and just gracious and wonderful to let me say something. She’s just been my hero and one of my idols ever since I was little. She’s a great person.”
Kanye West later posted an apology on his blog, saying:
“I’m sooooo sorry to taylor swift and her fans and her mom. I spoke to her mother right after and she said the same thing my mother would’ve said. She is very talented! I like the lyrics about being a cheerleader and she’s in the bleachers! …………………… i’m in the wrong for going on stage and taking away from her moment!……………. beyonce’s video was the best of this decade! I’m sorry to my fans if I let you guys down! I’m sorry to my friends at mtv. I will apologize to taylor 2mrw. welcome to the real world! everybody wanna booooo me but i’m a fan of real pop culture! No disrespect but we watchin’ the show at the crib right now cause … well you know! i’m still happy for taylor! Boooyaaawwww! you are very very talented! I gave my awards to outkast when they deserved it over me… that’s what it is!! i’m not crazy yall, i’m just real. Sorry for that! I really feel bad for taylor and i’m sincerely sorry! Much respect!!”
What do you think? Was it staged, just like Sacha Baron Cohen making Eminem storm out of the MTV Music Awards? Or is it just a Kanye West moment?
