DJ AM, who was a high-profile disc jockey in the celebrity club circuit since the late 1990s, was found dead on Friday evening in his apartment in Manhattan.

The 36-year-old’s passing comes nearly a year after he survived a small-plane crash which killed four passengers, while DJ AM and drummer Travis Barker were the lone survivors.

Police said the DJ’s body was found in his 7th-floor SoHo apartment at around 5:30 pm after his friends had tried to reach him for days. His body was discovered face-down in his bed wearing only sweatpants with a crack pipe and unknown prescription drugs nearby. Police spokesperson Paul J. Browne said the police did not suspect foul play.

DJ AM, whose real name was Adam Goldstein, admitted in 2007 that he drank heavily, used cocaine and smoked crack in his early 20s. He even revealed that he attempted suicide in 1997, but turned his life around and has managed to stay sober for nine years.

DJ AM regularly posted messages on Twitter. On Tuesday, he posted his final, poetic note – lyrics from a Grandmaster Flash song that said: “New York, New York. Big city of dreams, but everything in New York ain’t always what it seems.”
