Los Angeles, Calif.-The city’s officials are cramming on how to accommodate an enormous crowd that is expected to flock the Staple’s Center on Tuesday, as it is where Michael Jackson’s memorial services will be held.
The Staples Center can only hold 20,000 people, whereas 100,000 fans and mourners are expected to come and pay respect to the late pop icon.
The public memorial service is set on Tuesday, July 7, at 10:00 AM. Despite the holiday weekend, security officials are still trying to devise and effective plan to control the crowd and promote peace and safety throughout the event.
According to AEG Live CEO Randy Phillips, Jackson’s promoter and owner of the Staples Center, tickets to the even would be free. The distribution tactics however, are something he isn’t sure yet.
Los Angeles City Councilman Dennis Zine meanwhile assures that the security plans for the memorial are under fast development, but he still calls for the logistics to be settled.
“If you can imagine 100,000 people show up and you have 20,000 capacity, there is not sufficient room. Now you have a crowd-control problem,” he says. “It’s the worst time… to work something out.”
Among the current issues faced by the L.A. city council are the Fourth of July celebrations, as well as the costs of security given that policemen had to be paid overtime for the job-despite the fact that L.A. is cutting short of its finances thanks to the current recession.
