Blantyre, Malawi-Madonna is permitted to adopt “Mercy.” The decision was made by Malawi’s highest court Friday. The court overruled the decision of the lower court in which the pop star can have another member to her growing family-sans Guy Ritchie.
“I’m ecstatic,” says Madonna in her statement in which she also thanked the highest court in the country. “My family and I are looking forward to sharing our lives with her.”
Alan Chinula, Madonna’s lawyer, said he would arrange a passport for Chifundo, “Mercy” James, the three-year old girl which the Material Girl once wanted to adopt, but the plans were hindered by the man who claimed to be the father of the child. Hinula said it would take several days to have the passport ready, which is needed to have the girl’s travel plans approved.
Madonna already adopted a son named David just last year, who was also from Malawi. Her request to adopt Mercy was rejected last April on the grounds that the singer didn’t spend adequate time in Malawi.
But Chief Justice Lovemore Munlo, said that that was a narrow interpretation of the old laws in the country, and that “in this global village a man can have more than one place at which he resides.”
