Adam Lambert, as we all know it, was the crowd favorite during the run of ‘American Idol’ season 8. As flamboyant as he was, even celebrities were rooting for him to bag this season’s competition. But fate has its own twists-as after under 100 million votes cast, it was the rather unassuming Kris Allen who got the crown.
But why, after all the fanfare, did Adam lose?
Speculations arise after the results were out. There is the church and the hometown fan base, then comes the conservative American voters including the gender-conscious voting bloc, and Danny Gokey.
First off, Kris Allen, an active member of religious affiliation, New Life Baptist Church, is heavily supported by his church mates. It’s not longer a mystery that he gets widespread from his church organization and its branches located across the United States. In addition, Kris made his hometown proud with each and every episode that he passed through in order to get to the finals. Conway, and the rest of Arkansas, would not-and did not hesitate to push Kris to the top, as compared with Adam’s San Diego hometown where people are more segregated, as they are exposed to more choices and options of whom they want to win.
Second is the conservative voting population. Adam is creative, risk-taking, and yes, fierce enough to go beyond the current trends. But still, a lot of Americans still want to play it safe and rather choose to stay conventional, so they’d pick Kris instead. Also, the media hype over Adam’s sexuality has also greatly affected the voting decision of ‘American Idol’ fans, in a rather negative light.
Finally, there’s Danny Gokey. Danny, who finished third in the season’s contest, is pretty much like Kris Allen-except that he has never reached the bottom three. While he was being rooted to be Adam’s strongest contender, Danny received the least (yet equally substantial) number of votes when the time came to choose the final two. Danny’s fan base consisted of both active church goers and conservative voters, thus, between Adam and Kris, they’d pick the latter.
But everything’s now history. While Adam placed second, he’s still a darling, and is off to a bright future.
