After months of polls about who would be the next director for the third film of the Twilight Saga, Summit has revealed that “Eclipse” now has a director and no, it’s not Drew Barrymore.
Apparently, Summit has chosen “30 Days of Night” filmmaker David Slade to take over the franchise when Chris Weitz steps down after this year’s highly anticipated “New Moon.”
Author of the Twilight saga Stephenie Meyer said in a statement, “I am thrilled that David Slade will be directing ‘Eclipse.’ He’s a visionary filmmaker who has so much to offer this franchise. From the beginning, we’ve been blessed with wonderful directorial talent for the Twilight Saga, and I’m so happy that ‘Eclipse’ will be carrying on with that tradition.”
Contrary to the work of “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke and “New Moon” director Weitz, the David Slade has been known to create brutal films, such as “Hard Candy” and “30 Days of Night.” starring Josh Hartnett in the blood-soaked comic book tale of an Alaskan town under siege by vampires.
Although “30 Days” was a film about an Alaskan town under siege by vampires, Stephenie Meyer’s vampires are completely different from Slade’s version. As such, it can be exciting to see the more fiercer side of the Cullens should Slade direct Eclipse with the genre he’s used to, or embrace the book as it is.
Summit released a statement announcing the new director and included an official summary of “Eclipse.” It read:
“In ‘Eclipse,’ Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger as Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob — knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella is confronted with the most important decision of her life.”
