It’s been a mystery which actors will portray the remaining characters in the Twilight Saga and as the filming of New Moon progresses, more and more actors are signing on. This week, actor Michael Sheen reportedly signed on to portray Aro, the co-leader of the Volturi clan of vampires alongside Caius (played by British actor Jamie Campbell-Bowen).
The UK Daily mail confirmed Sunday that Michael Sheen has just agreed to play Aro after speaking to New Moon director Chris Weitz, who openly said that he was “aggressively” trying to bring Sheen into the film as Aro. Weitz admitted that although Sheen is actually “gracious and friendly” in real life, his character is a huge threat to the Cullens.
If you’re not sure who Michael Sheen is, just make a quick Google about the Underworld films and you’ll see that Sheen played the werewolf Lucian in three of the Underworld films.
Aro is the early founder of the Volturi coven, who has the ability to hear all thoughts that a person or vampire has had just by physical contact. Aro is a total badass - he is power-hungry and craves dominance.
I can see Michael Sheen as a leader and a suitable antagonist, but with a £5million pay for his role, it wouldn’t be shocking to see a great performance from the actor. It’s also a good move from the veteran actor, particularly if he’s looking for a new (and younger) audience. More actors will be announced as the cast leaves for Italy sometime in May.
