The contestants of American Idol’s season 8 headed to Studio A, the room at the Motown Historical Museum, which used to be the Motown Records hit-making factory. Since the contestants will be singing Motown classics on Wednesday, March 25, they worked with label founder Berry Gordy Jr. and legendary singer Smokey Robinson on their chosen songs.
The set was closed to the media, but the Idol hopefuls and the Motown legends greeted the public before and after their private sessions on West Grand Boulevard.
Idol will be paying tribute to the label as it celebrates its 50th anniversary. Like last week, contestants will be singing their own versions of classic Motown tunes and Robinson, who made songs like “Tears of a Clown” and “You Really Got a Hold on Me” popular, will perform on the following night’s show.
Meanwhile, the “American Idol” performance show will be airing on a new night next week. Instead of Tuesday, the top 10 will take the stage on Wednesday night and they will celebrate the record company that launched many famous careers, Motown.
The following night, Thursday March 26, legendary Motown singer and producer Smokey Robinson will take the stage to perform, while “American Idol” winner Ruben Studdard will also be performing his new single “Together”.
