Open Casting for New Moon has Been Confirmed, Controversies Surface.

Twilight has earned over $350 million to date without controversy, except for the threat of a legal action against Hot Topic for selling a Twilight-inspired perfume that smelled like a Nina Ricci scent. Aside from capturing the hearts of millions of fans around the world, the vampire romance film has also been praised and awarded with a Libby Award by the high-standard PETA. But the New Moon film, although hasn’t started shooting yet, is facing some controversial issues about ethnicity.

A few days before the casting for Twilight’s sequel, New Moon, has been confirmed, news broke that the Native American community is angry about how the Twilight franchise is casting some of the roles. An article entitled “Depiction of Indigenous Peoples in Twilight Outrage Native Americans” was published on Website Indigenous Portal and disputes casting non-Native Americans for the roles of Jacob Black (played by Taylor Lautner) and his friends from LA Push. The website claims that Indigenous actors are being passed over for more established names that are not of Native Americans descent.

However, Aikins/Cossey – the company handling local auditions in Vancouver, has announced casting calls for actors between 15 and 25 years old. The auditions will be held in three B.C. locations – Victoria (Feb 7 at Paul’s Motor Inn, 1900 Douglas St.) Vancouver (Feb 8 at Second Avenue Studios) and Kelowna (Feb 8 at Delta Grand Okanagan, 1310 Water St.). In the ad placed on Craiglist, “open casting for male and female First Nations/aboriginal actors” is listed. New Moon guarantees a number of speaking roles for aboriginal actors.

New Moon will start shooting in Vancouver this spring. It continues the story of Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and her teen vampire Romeo, Edward Cullen. When The Cullens leave town in fear of hurting Bella, she is sought by a Native American boy, Jacob, who turns out to be a werewolf. Members of Jacob’s first nation often turned into werewolves in the presence of vampires, ensuring plenty of supernatural fireworks when the Cullens return.

Now…if the Twilight franchise give in to the requests of the Native American community and replace Taylor Lautner for a Native American actor, wouldn’t you think the sequel would change completely? If Dakota Fanning will be cast as part of the Volturi vampires, will the Italians now request to replace her for an Italian actor, or the British actor Robert Pattinson for a Chicago-born actor? Should the roles be awarded to an actor from the same ethnicity/birth place based on the book or awarded to the best actor?

i think this is a bunch of BS!!if they change the roles of the original cast they will ruin New Moon as well as Eclipse and Breaking Dawn.

They should not change the Taylor from being Jacob. He worked his butt off to keep his role and if they change him it would be for nothing. Taylor is an outstanding and handsome actor who is perfect for the part. Besides the movie is fiction. I honestly don’t think someone is going to sit there throughout the movie and fuss over the actors and actresses because they aren’t full blooded Native American. I guess i could never star in a movie with them because I’m only a quarter Native American. They just need to drop it and quit whining. ITS A MOVIE FOR CHRIST SAKE!

  5. Ashton says:

I agree with Sylvia on this one! Taylor played an excelent role of jacob black, he had the role exactly right! I dont believe that Taylor should be pushed out of the role due to him not being aboriginal, I’m native/aboriginal, should people push me away or shy away from me because i am of a certain race? No, its like saying to someone I will not be your friend because you are asian or because your skin is a different tone than mine….Its not fair to the fans of twilight, the makers of twilight or Taylor who plays a part in Twilight… Again I agree with Sylvia that taking Taylor out of the film production and replacing him would create a huge issue with how the movies turned out.

Why would anyone want to replace the actors of twilight! Dakota Fanning would be perfect in the Volturi! You must leave Taylor Lautner as Jacob and everyone else as who they are! Who cares if taylor is not full blooded Native American! I agree with Ashton because its like leaving a friend just beacause there different!!! I also agree with Sylvia because taylor DID WORK HIS BUTT OFF to keep his role!!! I MOSTLY agree with dori because this is a bunch of BS and this will ruin New Moon, Eclipes and Breaking Dawn!!!! If anyone is replaced then thats the end! New Moon wont be watched as much as twilight!!!! Think about what everyone is commeting because it can be a real big help!!!!!

  8. Maryann says:

I, personally, was upset at their choice of Taylor to play Jacob because I am Native American. I don’t think all the fuss was about him not being FBI, but over him not being Native and not having substantial ties to the native american community. This still upsets me. However, I am glad to hear that they are actually casting Natives now.

  9. alyssa says:

i think that is wrong because taylor is a really good actor and really hot too. he is everything the twilight producers need to be jacob and everyone knows it unless they dont know good acting
